Before the launch, United CEO Oscar Munoz described the new livery as “an evolution not a revolution,” according to FlightGlobal. The new aircraft features the same gray belly as the previous livery but a few stylistic changes have been made. The design is rounder, with more soft lines than hard creases between colors. The “United” lettering on the side of the aircraft has been made larger and extends further across the body of the plane.

However, the change most visible to the general public will be the tail. No longer will United’s planes carry the iconic yellow globe but instead a blue globe, with both darker and lighter tones of the color. The engines have also been painted a popping blue, instead of their former gray.
This is the first rebranding since United and Continental airlines merged in 2010.
The first aircraft to don the new paint job is a Boeing 737-800. It will fly into Los Angeles Wednesday night after its debut, according to FlightAware.
Although the concept may not appear to be a complete rebranding, it takes tremendous effort to redo the paint job of an aircraft. In a video, United revealed the process behind repainting an aircraft.

The new livery is part of the airline’s complete overhaul. Next year, new employee uniforms are expected to debut, featuring similar design updates.
