The New Orleans Saints have been looking for a cornerback on the trader's market, and it looks like they've found one: per ESPN's Adam Schefter, they are trading for New York Giants former first round draft pick Eli Apple.
Apple's career with the Giants has been rocky at best, but he's still a super-athletic young guy with playmaking upside. With the Saints picking him up this early in the week, he's very likely to play against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football on Oct. 28.
This is now the third former Ohio State Buckeyes defensive back on the Saints' roster: Apple, a 2016 first round draft pick, now rejoins Marshon Lattimore (a 2017 first rounder) and Vonn Bell (a 2016 second rounder). Those are some good influences to have, not to mention position coach Aaron Glenn.
We don't know what the Saints are giving up to acquire Apple, so we can't fully rule out a blockbuster move for Arizona Cardinals All-Pro Patrick Peterson. But it's not looking good for the Saints to make the big trade happen that so many fans have hoped for. Interestingly, Schefter added that Peterson was 'the ultimate' preference for the Saints, but they added Apple.
The key words, per Schefter's reporting? For now.
Update: Schefter reported that the assets exchanged for Apple are a 4th round draft pick in 2019, and a 7th round choice in 2020. That leaves ample draft capital for Peterson, if the Saints truly still have interest.
