Knowing that an awesome gift to yourself has the power to give back to others, too. Like FEED and Toms, these five ethical companies are making a difference in the world with every sale, from feeding the hungry to employing and clothing the homeless, meaning you can do something nice for yourself and someone else in one fell swoop.

The Story: California-based designer George Esquivel grew up in poverty and wanted to use his current platform as a shoe designer to make a difference for those in need. He created an IndieGogo campaign for the Esquivel x Tote, a handmade-to-order canvas and leather bag emblazoned with an x, which reached its goal 10 times over in January. The purchase of each bag helps to feed a hungry family in his native Southern California for over a year with a delivery of a backpack full of food every weekend. Each tote is made in Orange County (also the location of his atelier), and uses the same technique he applies to his made-to-order shoes: stitched by experts with an eye for luxury.

Fun Fact: Esquivel’s got an A-list fan base: shoe clients include Emma Stone, LeBron James, Madonna, and Gwen Stefani. Socially conscious actress Sophia Bush has even raved about the tote on Instagram.
